The Lakers – Why Do I Hate Them?

// June 15th, 2009 // 1 Comment » // Sports

I keep asking myself that question…. Shouldn’t I love the Lakers? I have been in L.A for almost a year, I grew up loving Kareem/Magic/Worthy… but this incarnation of the Lakers… why are they so unlikable? I mean ask anyone in the continental U.S. outside of Southern California & the consensus is unanimous… Kobe Bryant’s Lakers are just not loved… Obviously you go overseas and the Lakers are king, but what do they know? I mean soccor… really… grown men chasing a ball for miles only using their feet, playing out in the worst dramatic acting anytime they are touched to get an obnoxious ref to raise a yellow/red flag…

I even have friends who are heavily involved with the Lakers organization and certain team members… but I still can’t stand them…

This morning I followed my typical routine & stopped by Starbux, had my medium (not grande coffee) and a oatmeal… and read the LA Times… I really love T.J. Simers… he writes for the Times, but is able to be critical about the Lakers…  Let me summarize a couple points he makes which I agree with 100% & challenge you Laker fans to counter/deny:

  • Kobe did it without Shaq – TRUE – but he had Pau.
  • Sasha did  it  without  ever making a shot in the finals.
  • Lakers owners (Jerry/Jeanie/John/Jim) didn’t even bother to fly out for this win to be there to support their team… instead he sent out his reject kids Joey, Jesse, and Janie.

That being said congratulations to the  LA Lakers :) Kobe is an incredible player… He is one step under MJ… will never be at the same level as MJ, don’t even try to compare sorry… LeBron is the only player I see that has the potential to be considered in the same league as MJ… in time… in time…

Boxing / MMA

I had the privilege of watching the Pacquiao / Hatton fight last night with some friends and family… What an incredible bout! Growing up in the 80’s I remember gathering around the television set preparing for a Sugar Ray or Tyson fight. Although the duration was similar to last night’s fight, the experience was exhilarating.

With the demise of boxing, and lack of stars over the last decade I have really gotten into Mixed Martial Arts (The UFC) and the thrill I once felt for boxing really comes out there. Last night’s fight, and Manny Pacquiao in general, really make me remember the glory days of boxing. I have had the argument with many friends that a MMA star like Anderson Silva or GSP in a street fight could take out the best lb-4-lb boxer, but when it comes to a straight-boxing bout, there is no contest. Paq-Man would kill anyone… He is incredible, unreal, and just the nicest guy who values religion and family above all things. With the help of Freddie Roach, he has really cemented himself as a legend and someone who will be in the boxing hall of fame alongside the likes of Ali, Frasier, and Marciano.

So what’s next for Pacquiao? The multi-million dollar question right… Well with Floyd Mayweather Jr. coming out of retirement yesterday, that collision will be a match made in heaven for boxing and sports fans alike. I can’t wait to see that go down, I just hope Manny can get the weight up to 147 and still maintain the strength and agility he possess in his lighter weight match-ups.
